Montgomery County Music Teachers Association

MCMTA has cancelled its general meeting scheduled for Tuesday, February 9th at Stone Ridge School. The decision was made early due to concerns for our presenter, Luiz de Moura Castro, who must travel from Connecticut and needed ample notice regarding travel plans. In addition, if history repeats itself, widespread poor road conditions and power outages may close schools for several days, affecting our venue, and make travel difficult for our members.

Mr. De Moura Castro has kindly agreed to do his presentation during the 2010-2011 MCMTA general meeting schedule. We look forward to seeing his presentation next year when hopefully Mother Nature will be kinder to us!

Our next general meeting will be on March 16, 2010.

President, MCMTA

(MCMTA) is a non-profit organization of independent music teachers. We represent private music teachers of all instruments and are affiliated with the Maryland State Music Teachers association (MSMTA) and the Music Teacher National Association (MTNA). Membership in MCMTA is available to all members of the state organization.

MCMTA was founded in 1965 with 25 members as a local chapter of the MTNA. With a current membership over 225 teachers, MCMTA is the largest chapter in Maryland.

We offer a variety of programs to enrich both students and teachers. Our programs include:

  • A monthly meeting with a noted guest speaker/musicians
  • Non-competitive recitals for all level of students
  • Judged recitals for students who wish to gain more competitive experience
  • A themed festival for intermediate and advanced students
  • Piano concerto competition for three different levels
  • Annual Scholarship competitions for both piano and strings
  • MSMTA Theory and Musicianship testing in multiple levels
  • The Margaret E. Weissenfluh Fund for students in need of financial assistance to continue their music study regardless of talent or ability
  • Referral service for both students and teachers

Today, MCMTA members represent highly qualified private instructors in home studios, community music schools, colleges, and universities. Some members also work as classroom music teachers and church musicians. Others are published composers and authors of educational materials. Additionally, our teachers perform, lecture and judge at state, national, and international levels.

The purpose of MCMTA is to provide the highest quality of private musical instruction for students and outstanding enrichment for teachers. Our teachers are trained musicians who have a love of communicating their art and expertise to others. We encourage all members to be active participants in our chapter.
